Abortion rights protesters interrupt Joel Osteen’s church service

Members of a national abortion rights organization protested outside Joel Osteen’s megachurch as the nation braces for the Supreme Court to potentially overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision legalizing abortion nationwide.

Images of Sunday’s protest at Lakewood Church in Houston, posted to Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights’ Twitter Accountshows three protesters taking off most of their clothes and shouting, “It’s my body, my fucking choice”, after Osteen finishes his morning prayer.

One woman in the trio shouted, “Flip Roe back, hell no,” while another shouted, “I am who I say I am; I do what I say I can do because I have a choice! before ushers escorted them out of the church.

Osteen is one of the nation’s most recognized evangelists, bringing 45,000 attendees to Lakewood Church each week.

Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights organizer Coco Das told HuffPost that the group protested the megachurch on behalf of church members who believe abortion rights shouldn’t be taken away.

“Our nonviolent actions were not against [Osteen] or Lakewood Church,” Das said. “We wanted to wake up people across the country and the world. We challenge people to stand up and take action against these dangerous measures.

The activist group’s protest follows a leaked draft notice, published by Politico in May, suggesting the Supreme Court will overturn the monumental decision. The court is expected to issue its official decision in the coming weeks.

Overthrow Roe v. Wade will have an immediate ripple effect across the country for people seeking to terminate their pregnancies, as at least 26 states are likely or certain to ban abortion as soon as the ruling is reversed.
