Well-known Brooklyn Bishop Lamor Whitehead was robbed at gunpoint during a live-streamed church service on Sunday.
The incident happened at Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in Canarsie, Brooklyn around 11:15 a.m. on July 24, according to BNC News.
The outlet, informed by the New York Police Department, said the masked assailants robbed Whitehead and his wife of approximately $400,000 worth of jewelry.
Police further allege that the armed assailants fled the scene on foot before entering a white Mercedes Benz, and were last seen heading east on Avenue D.
In a video of the theft circulating on social media, Bishop Whitehead said “okay, okay”, before slowly getting on all fours, lowering himself to the ground as the thieves entered his church.
Bishop Whitehead explains the incident in his own words
“We were at church, during the morning service,” Whitehead recalled in a video shared to Instagram on Sunday. “And when I was preaching, I saw three or four armed men come in.”
“When I saw them entering the sanctuary with their guns, I said to everyone, ‘Come down. Everyone get down,” the Bishop added. “I didn’t know if they wanted to shoot at the church or if they were just coming for a robbery.”
Whitehead, who unsuccessfully ran for Brooklyn borough president against winner Antonio Reynoso, said he knows people will wonder why he’s such a bling-out bishop.
“I saw a blog post ‘Oh, the bishop who wears a lot of diamonds has been robbed.’ And I know a lot of people are going to be like, ‘Well, why are you so flashy?’ Whitehead said. “It’s not about me being flashy “It’s me who buys what I want to buy. It’s my prerogative to buy what I want to buy. If I’ve worked hard for it, I can buy what I want to buy.”
