NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – A judge has postponed the trial until next month for the man accused of drawing a gun during a service at a North Nashville church on Sunday morning.

Police said Dezire Baganda, 26, was sitting at the Nashville Light Mission Pentecostal Church on Trinity Lane. When police said Baganda, gun in hand, walked to the altar where several parishioners and the parish priest were praying.

Surveillance footage shows Baganda waving the gun when, according to police, he told everyone to stand up and “pointed the handgun at the congregation.” It was then that police said the pastor “quickly attacked Baganda” before he could fire his gun.

In the video, many church members helped the pastor disarm Baganda and keep him down until the police arrived.

Baganda, who is not a member of the Nashville Light Mission Pentecostal Church, was originally charged with 15 counts of aggravated assault. On Monday, police said Baganda now faces 57 counts of aggravated assault.

The judge ordered Baganda to undergo a mental assessment. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 7.
