A fire broke out inside the Triumph Church on Sunday evening in the women’s toilets.

Vicksburg Warren E-911 was alerted by callers and a smoke alarm system to a structure fire at Triumph Church on Honeysuckle Lane around 6:20 p.m.

Fire units from Culkin and Bovina were dispatched to the scene, according to Jeff Riggs of the Warren County Fire Department.

Firefighter Cedric Martin was first on the scene and directed Firefighters E-204, Culkin, Bovina, Northeast and Fisher Ferry to a source of thick smoke in the bathroom.

Riggs said firefighters discovered the source was an overhead exhaust fan that had caught fire. Firefighters removed the fan and aired the building. No injuries were reported and smoke damage was limited to the toilets.

Church pastor Mike Fields said he felt lucky the damage was limited.

“The fire was contained within the ventilation fan and the surrounding framing,” Fields said. “It created quite a bit of smoke, so there’s quite a bit of smoke damage in the toilet itself, but actually no real fire damage. We were really blessed.

He said a few small groups were gathering at the church at the time and were evacuated as soon as the fire alarm sounded.

“It was a scary situation for about 15-20 minutes, but when we realized it was under control, we certainly breathed a sigh of relief,” he said.

Fields said they will have to close the restrooms until repairs are complete; however, he did not expect the incident to affect church service times.
